SomeOne’s pretty polly

News

A week or so ago, whilst writing up a SomeOne new release, our rhetoric included the line ‘another week, another SomeOne launch‘. I said that in jest, at the time. But here we are, literally, another week and, yes, another big SomeOne launch (and it’s only Monday). So, come fly with SomeOne and behold, their latest endowment to the world – Stelios-backed low-cost African airline FastJet, who launch their maiden flights from east Africa at the end of November.

The strategic new identity that features an African Grey parrot, has been applied across all primary branded surfaces — from the plane livery to staff uniforms. But why a parrot? (Who doesn’t love a good parrot?) Not just any pretty polly, an African Grey pretty polly – widely considered to be one of the most intelligent birds on the planet and known in African mythology for having the ‘kindest and most generous heart’, furthermore, is commonly kept as a family pet and are deeply loved by African people. All perfect connections for Africa’s newest and ‘smarter’ way to travel.

SomeOne’s Co-Founder and Executive Creative Director, Simon Manchipp said, “An airline is one the best opportunities to deploy our BrandWorld thinking — the team at FastJet immediately saw the potential in launching with a wider reaching range of Brand assets from day one. Colours, logo’s, patterns, typefaces, systems, sounds, films, animations, music and of course the new spokes creature — the African Grey — all these create a smart, cohesive brand launch with a strong story at it’s heart.”

As always, wink n’ wave here, extended reading here.

Helms Workshop {Austin, Tx}

Awesome agencies

Huge fan. Huge. Of Texas’ finest Helms Workshop. Huge, for emphasis. True craftsmen of the all-Americana typographic cunning, an art that I’ve always found absorbing. Back to Helms, naturally an award-winning creative firm with a broad range of clients but for me, it’s their packaging work that’s particularly right on point.

Helms “combine smart, strategic thinking with wild-eyed creativity in a highly collaborative environment, producing powerful ideas and unexpected solutions that bring big results to businesses across the country.”

Great stuff, sexy stylings, show them some love…

SomeOne Weve a good yarn

News

So, here we go again, namely another big launch sewn up from the trigger happy gun slingers at SomeOne. This time they’ve turned their hand to a spot of telecoms branding, what with it being all the rage this week. Enter Weve (exit the apostrophe autocorrect insists on slapping in).

Weve is the big joint venture, bringing together the UK’s three big hitting mobile network operators, namely EE, Telefonica UK and Vodafone UK. It bills itself as the new focal point for a whole new set of experiences and ideas across the mobile spectrum, everywhere from mobile marketing and advertising to payments and transactions, loyalty programs and coupons; a single point of contact, a single point of focus. The coming together of all things mobile and mobile commerce which is what the name and brand set about reflecting. Mobile harmony, if you like.

“The duality of the name means that Weve can talk about the partners and the benefit they offer together. Weve come together to make mobile communications easier… as well as the inference of ‘weaving together’ what were complex mobile offers. The identity is simply formed by things coming together. Designed to change, frequently, regularly and relevantly.”

Weve will be made of mobile phones, people, marbles, digital data, light bulbs, footprints, ball bearings, cogs, clients logos, branded products, faces… The brand launches launches next week.

You know the drill, full story here.

Studio Dumbar {Rotterdam}

Awesome agencies

Glorious work from Rotterdam based Studio Dumbar who’s work, incredibly includes the visual identity of the Dutch police, back in the early 90’s. Their recently relaunched site houses a body of work that amounts to a menagerie of amazing aesthetics each as inspiring and challenging as the last.

As well as having Dutch roots, you can more recently find their offices in  Shanghai and Seoul with the studio having originally being founded back in 1977.

Emily Isles {UK}

Illustrators

Scottish-born Milan-educated illustrator come graphic designer Emily Isles began to work as graphic designer for a small publishing house called No Mad, designing city cultural guides for the creative community. That’s where she learned more about typography and grid systems, having started out with a degree in Interior Architecture.

“I dug out the typewriter from the back of a cupboard at my partner’s parent’s house in Sicily, the Lettera 22 was used by the great Italian journalist Indro Montanelli. That’s how my Italian Invention poster series was born; I love the little personal stories each items have and their meanings to Italian culture. Now that I’ve started selling them, people all over the world have written to me saying how much they love their mokas and typewriters. We use the Moka every morning, my partner has a vespa at home and I’d love to drive an Ape one day!”

The charming italian invention poster series are illustrated in pen and then scanned and coloured in Photoshop. Emily uses textures from photographs she has taken.

She’s cites her inspiration as: anything vintage and all things Italian, clocks, bicycles and typewriters, handmade objects, phrases from books (Bruno Munari and Dave Eggers leap out), diagrams, infographics, maps, architectural drawings, the photography of Alec Soth and above all simplicity. It’s lovely stuff, Emily very capable of turning her hand, but I do love those italian invention posters…
